The Nature and Purposes of Research in the Creative Media Industries

Primary research/self-generated research

1: Define primary research
Primary Research is new research that is collected by an individual or group, carried out to answer specific issues or questions. To collect this information, you could create questionnaires or surveys for people to answer.

2: What did you do?
I've collected primary research from three different units; one from music video production, one from animation and the other from my TV advert. All of which are for similar things which are feedback for videos that me and others have created.

3: List examples from your projects
This is an example of primary research from my TV advert unit;

Secondary research

1. Define secondary research
Secondary Research is old research that has been previously collected, to be used for other research. To collect this information, you could use the internet to look up existing information or go to your local library.

2. What did you do?
I've collected secondary research from several units such as one from my TV advert unit about Unilever and another from my advertising unit about E4.

3. List examples from your projects
This is an example of secondary research; http://robertlancastercert.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/research-and-planning-e4-and-brief.html

The post linked above comes from my advertising unit about E4. The secondary research comes questions that I've answered thanks to the internet (which is secondary research); questions such as "Who owns E4?" and "How long have E4 existed?".

Quantitative research

1. Define quantitative research
Quantitative Research gathers information that is in numerical form that can be transferable into usable statics that can be used for Graphs and tables.

2. What did you do?
Like primary research, I have used quantitative and qualitative research in a couple of different units; one from animation and the other from my TV advert. All of which are for similar things which are feedback for videos that me and others have created.

3. List examples from your projects
I used primary research to conduct a survey about an animation called "Emortal Kombat". Here is one of the questions and their answers;

The question reads; "What age range do you think this attracts most? (Primary Audience)". Because this question involves numbers, graphs are easily able to present this data.

Qualitative research

1. Define quantitative research
Qualitative Research gathers information that is not in numerical form such as open-ended questionnaires and long worded answers.

2. What did you do?
Like primary research, I have used quantitative and qualitative research in a couple of different units; one from music video production, one from animation and the other from my TV advert. All of which are for similar things which are feedback for videos that me and others have created.

3. List examples from your projects
I used primary research to conduct a survey about a TV Advert for a Unilever product called Ben & Jerry's. Here is one of the questions and their answers;

The question reads; "What story do you think is being told in this advert?" Because this is an open question, graphs are not possible with this kind of data with the use of long sentences and words.

Data gathering agencies

1. Explain what the BARB does. Also, IMDB and Box Office Mojo can be mentioned.

BARB stands for Broadcasters Audience Research Board. It provides weekly UK audience figures. BARB is jointly owned by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, Sky and the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising. It collects data from viewers who own a special box on top of their TV sets which tracks the programmes they watch.

IMDb stands for the Internet Movie Database. It's an online site that stores information about films, TV programmes and video games.Users can add reviews to the site and rate content which can be read by other individuals.

Box Office Mojo tracks box office revenue. It was bought by IMDb, owned by Amazon. It is widely used in the film industry as a source of data.

2. Search for either 'media research agencies' or 'data gathering agencies' and you will find a range of good examples.

RAJAR stands for Radio Joint Audience Research and is similar to BARB with only one difference; RAJAR record radio listener rating instead. RAJAR are also in collaboration with the BBC, IPA and ISBA.

NRS stands for National Readership Survey and is conducted among 250 of the UK's newspapers and magazines which focuses on the characteristics of the audience of each product. The survey is governed and funded mainly by the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), Newspaper Publishers Association (NPA) and Professional Publishers Association (PPA).

Audience and Market research

1. Summarise audience and market research.

Audience research has the purpose of helping companies discover what target audience would be best suited for their product. This may be influenced by factors such as age, gender, ethnic background etc.

Market research has the purpose of helping companies discover what people want from a product. This type of research covers factors such as psychographics; attitudes, aspiration etc.

2. What did you do?

For audience and market research, I researched a company called Unilever as part of my TV advert unit.

3. Explain the audience research from your projects.

Below is a presentation about Unilever. Inside it, I researched brand identity for one of its products called Ben & Jerry's ice cream. This is an example of audience and market research.

Production research

1. Summarise production research.

Production research has the purpose of helping companies decide on a number of factors that will affect how they create their product. Such factors depend on the product the company is making. If this was a film shoot, you might want to research the cast and crew, the location, the filming and editing equipment etc.

2. What did you do?

For production research, I have created Pre-Production paperwork which includes production research in many of my units such as the DepicT, TV Adverts, 3MW, Animation, Single Camera Production and Music Videos unit.

3. Explain production research from your projects.

This is an example from the Music Videos unit, while not all of the Pre-Production paperwork is production research, much of it is such as the Location Recce's and Minor Releases.
